The easiest way to volunteer is by helping out at WCA competitions by running and judging! After experiencing a few competitions, you can also choose to organise competitions. If you wish to organise a competition, you should read the WCA Competition Organiser Guidelines. Finally, there are also roles as WCA Delegates and WCA Team/Committee members which provide an excellent opportunity to assist the WCA.

In order to become a WCA delegate, it is highly recommended to first organise a few competitions. This will allow you to get to know your local delegates, who will be able to assist you on your path to become a delegate.

Once you have competed in your first competition, the Delegate(s) will verify and submit the results. This process can take anywhere from a day to one week.

Most WCA Competitions will upload results live to live.worldcubeassociation.org. You can check here to see your live results and find out whether you have progressed to subsequent rounds of an event. However, some competitions will use alternate software.

You should bring the puzzles that you would like to use to compete, but other equipment (eg. timers) will be provided by the organizers. If it is your first competition, please bring an official ID (birth certificate, driver’s license etc) so that the Delegate(s) can verify your details (name and Date of Birth) before creating your WCA ID.

All WCA competitions have a schedule which can be found in the schedule tab of the competition website, which illustrates the starting and finishing timings of each event and round. It is also common that in a round of any event, competitors will be divided into groups. You can always ask the competition organizers on which group you are in. However, it is always a good practice to be present at the start of the event.

The WCA has a set of regulations that must be used to recognize your results as official, which are later then posted on your profile. The WCA Delegate and organizers of the competition will be explaining what are the most important regulations to follow as a competitor during the tutorial for new competitors. If you are unsure of whether you have performed correctly or not, you can always ask the WCA Delegate and they will guide you through the necessary steps.

An official WCA competition refers to competitions that are recognized by the WCA in which they need to follow WCA Regulations and Policies in order to achieve that. A WCA competition can only be official if a WCA Delegate attends it and applies all necessary regulations to officiate all competitors results.

The scrambler’s role is to scramble puzzles of the competitors according to official scrambles provided by the WCA Delegate. A scrambler must ensure that each scrambled puzzle matches the official scrambles correctly by checking the colors. If the puzzle is not scrambled correctly, then the scrambler must solve the puzzle and scramble it again firmly. Scramblers are usually selected by competition organizers as they need to be fast at both scrambling and solving the puzzles, ensuring that competitors get their turns on time.

A judge sits next to the competitor’s solving station and their role is to observe the competitor while inspecting and solving to ensure that the competitor’s performed the right procedure and followed the WCA Regulations. The judge should be aware that some events are judged differently than others. If a judge has a doubt, then they can always call the WCA Delegate and refer to their call.

A runner’s role is to deliver the cube from the scrambling station to the competitor’s solving station while ensuring that the scrambled puzzle is hidden from the sight of the competitor. Runners use scorecards to figure out which cube belongs to which competitor. This is usually considered as the easiest task in the competition for competitors who wish to volunteer at their first competition.

Yes indeed! WCA competitions are run by volunteers from the planning till the day of the competition. The more volunteers available to help the smoother the competition would be. Some competitions may have designated Volunteers for the competition, and you can always ask competition organizers if they need any assistance. Judging and running are considered good roles to begin with as a first timer where you will be able to learn more about WCA regulations and competition flow. Scrambling roles are usually given to competitors who have more experience in WCA competitions and are very quick when solving and scrambling.

You only need to be able to solve the puzzle within the time limit! For the 3x3 event, this is usually either 5 minutes or 10 minutes. We heavily encourage people of all abilities to participate!

If you have never competed before, your WCA ID will be generated and given to you once you have successfully competed in your first competition. Some competitions accept in-person registration. You can check the competition website or contact the organizers of the competition to see if this is true for the competition in which you’re interested. Otherwise, the WCA unfortunately has a strict policy about not allowing competitors to register after the registration period has ended due to logistical reasons. No, there are no age categories, nor are there categories based upon skill level. Everybody competes together! Most people are simply striving to be better than themselves from yesterday.

Your registration must be manually approved by the organizers, which may take a few days. If you haven't seen approval of your registration after 48 hours, you can email the competition organizers using the emails found on the competition's website to check in on the status.

If a competition has reached its capacity, you will automatically be placed on the waiting list when you register. If you don’t make it off the waitlist, you will receive a full refund of any registration fee that you paid.
